I am an Attorney based in Washington, DC. (I am a member of the DC, RSA and NY Bars and an Attorney since 1991).

My practice is focused on solving complex, sensitive and very important issues for my clients by either handling the matter myself or assembling the best team of professionals available to help me resolve the matter for you.  I place a high value on discretion, service and resolving issues. 

I assist corporations, professionals, senior executives and individuals with Strategic Counseling, Complex Problem Solving, Real Estate Closings, Loan and Lease Negotiations, Arbitrations, Visa Solutions (including the $1,000,000.00 Green Card), Regulatory Compliance Audits, and "on call" External Legal Affairs (outside counsel) Director services in most areas of the law.

1) I handle your matters personally; 

This is an economical, practical and reassuring option to persons/entities who need their affairs taken care of  on a regular and ongoing basis or in their absence or after passing on.

Please understand that your professionl advisor could end up becoming the one person whom you confide in and who has full knowledge of all your affairs and who understands all the issues of concern to you.  This is a significant transfer of trust on your part and assumption of fiduciary responsibility on the part of your advisor. Accordingly, choosing this professional is very important to you, your business and your family.  As such, I advise you take to take your time and do your homework before choosing who you want to be your trusted adviser and occupy the  "right hand" person position for you.  Trust is a very important component of the Attorney/Client relationship.

2) I refer you to others who could help you, or work with (co-counsel) other attorneys and professionals to get your issues takes care of.

 

I have over time developed strong working relationships with other attorneys and related professional service providers who are very knowledgeable in their specific areas of practice. These attorneys range from the specialist solo practitioner to the partner at the mega 2000 lawyer firm level.  

These relationships enable me to identify and assemble the best team to solve your problem.  As such I am able to assist you in many areas of the law including Residential and Commercial Real Estate Transactions, Health Care and White Collar Defense, Personal Injury, Land Use, Criminal Defense, Family Disputes, Visas, Lobbying, Civil Litigation, Corporate Legal Services and more.

My access to this talented group of professionals enables my clients to have co-counsel from a comprehensive list of professional service providers while continuing to have me as their Managing Attorney or Legal Affairs Director. I am able to select and retain and work with a team of competent professionals to resolve your issues.

As your External Legal Affairs Director/Counselor/Adviser, I am always on your side and in your corner whether you are a corporation, professional or individual.  I can help you think through issues of concern, formulate strategy, ensure regulatory and organizational compliance, pre-empt problems, oversee legal affairs, hire and manage additional professional advisers who can be brought on to deal with a specific issue only, and more.

3) I assist law firms and in-house counsel as a consultant on their existing matters. 

4) I speak, moderate and train at corporate, government, nonprofit events.

My practice philosophy which I have "finally internalized" (after many many years of practice and well after attending Harvard Business School and Georgetown Law School) can be summarized as follows: FYI: Mr. Laher was previously an associate attorney with the Law Firm of Jones Day in their Washington DC office. Over the years, Attorney Laher has represented a wide variety of clients in complex civil and criminal proceedings.  

Being a good lawyer does not require one to know all the law all the time.  Instead, it requires one ...

Firstly, to spend enough time trying to fully understand the issues and figuring out in which area of law expertise is required.

Secondly, to know where to find these laws and then focus on providing a solution based on them,

Thirdly, to accept that legal issues are complex and specialized and one cannot be an expert in every area of the law,

Fourthly, to willingly find and work with other professionals (especially if they are more knowledgeable than you are on the subject matter) who are able to assist you best advance the cause of your client.

Fifthly, to realize that bringing on others to assist you is is a good thing and does not make you any less smart than you actually are. The key is to know when to look for assistance, where to look for it and who to select to work with you to get the job done. (This one took a while to register at the subconscious level).

Please note that the more detail you provide, the easier it is for me to decide whom to respond to.  We schedule all meetings or calls.  We do not interrupt our scheduled time with you unless it an emergency.  We believe that unscheduled contacts take away from time that has been set aside for another client.
